Shipping and the English Channel – Two Lanes Seen from Space

The image below shows a time series of shipping over the English Channel. This data was collected by combing together hundreds of images from ESAs, Sentinel-1 satellites which use radar.   The data is collected from 2016, 2017 and 2018.

This high-quality image shows the sheer volume of traffic and is colour coded to provide more detail on the ships

  • Blue – 2016
  • Green – 2017
  • Red – 2018

As the channel is a critical route to the Atlantic and the North Sea, it’s very busy – and operates a two-lane scheme to avoid a collision. The high res 20mb image is worth looking at – to see the detail.

These images show the capabilities to track and understand logistics and even individual ship movements. It will be interesting to see if there is any impact at the end of 2021 a result of Breixt
