Small satellites, with their low cost to deploy and build are driving new capabilities and opportunities. From increased frequency of measurements to entirely new measurements for commercial use.
This data is then used for a wide variety of systems from predicting the volume of oil storage by measuring the height of oil containers with radar – to looking for fishing vessels that are trying to avoid detection by switching off their identifiers. Large satellite are also used to monitor for sanctions breaches, – for example in North Korea
